10/2 - SOKA University of America - lunch. SOKA is a Japanese term meaning to "create value." Located in southern Orange County, CA, SOKA University is a liberal arts school founded on the Buddhist principles of peace, human rights, and the sanctity of life. Students of all faiths are welcome. Unique to SOKA are its focus on the Pacific Basin, as well as a study-abroad requirement, included in tuition, that is coupled with the study of the foreign language spoken in that country. SOKA also has 3-1/2 week block classes, or learning clusters. The school emphasizes leadership and contributive citizenship.
10/3 - University of Portland - morning break. UP sits on a beautiful bluff in north Portland overlooking the Willamette River. The beautiful new Shiley engineering building gives future engineers a chance to study and experiment in a state-of-the-art space. UP is the top producer of Fulbright Scholarships for graduate study abroad for the 3rd year in a row!
10/4 - Reed College - morning break. This little school (1400 students) in southeast Portland is known for its intellectual rigor and production of Rhodes Scholars. But it is not a place where fun goes to die - right on its website is a tab giving examples of the 9,437 things to do when you're not studying.
